Every list on this page is hand-built. No scraped bestseller rankings, no algorithm-generated filler, no titles included because they were easy to link to. If a book appears on one of our lists, someone here read it and can tell you why it earned the spot.
How our lists work
Ranked, not alphabetised. If we say a book is the best on a subject, we mean it’s better than the one below it, and we explain why.
Ordered for reading, where it matters. For subjects that build on themselves — investing, statistics, economic history — the sequence is part of the recommendation. Reading the right books in the wrong order wastes a lot of time.
Updated, not abandoned. Lists get revisited as we read more. When a book drops off a list, we note what replaced it.
Honest about gaps. If we haven’t read the obvious contender on a subject, we say so rather than including it on reputation.

Lists in progress
We’re building these out now. New lists are published as the reading behind them is finished — which is slower than writing them from summaries would be, and the entire reason they’re worth reading.
